Prayer Shawls and Robes have been made for centuries. They are universal and embracing; they comfort and enfold; wrap and warm; mother and hug; shelter and embrace. Those who knit and receive shawls and robes are blessed.
People knit/crochet shawls and lap robes for many reasons. Most prayer shawl ministries knit/crochet shawls and robes to console those who are grieving, comfort those who are ill, and bring hope to those in despair. They may also be knit/crocheted to celebrate life and its milestones. The reasons to knit/crochet a shawl or lap robe are as numerous as the people who knit/crochet them.
In July of 2008 we started a Prayer Shawl Ministry here at St. John’s.
Twelve different knitters and crocheters have donated more than 100 prayers shawls. We have given over 90 of them to those who are in need of some comfort from the SJB Family.
If you know of anyone who would benefit from receiving a prayer shawl, please stop by the office to pick one up.
With each prayer shawl we send a card that says:
May God’s grace be upon the person receiving this shawl,
Warming, comforting, enfolding and embracing.
May this mantle be a safe haven…a sacred place of
Security and well-being…
Sustaining and embracing in good times as well as difficult ones.
May you be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace, and wrapped in love.
